Born October, 3, 1969, Zampedri started racing go-karts in 1981. By 1988, this Brescia, Italy native had started his first season in the Italian Formula Alfa Boxer Championship. He swept the series a year later, with eight poles, and five victories-winning his first championship title. For his outstanding effort, Italy's Autosprint magazine named Zampedri the "Most Promising Young Italian Driver of the Year."
In 1990, he switched to the Italian Formula 3 Series, winning Rookie of the Year honors. After a few seasons in Formula 3 Series and Formula 3000 Series, Zampedri joined the PPG Cup.
His debut came in 1994, at Australia. He competed in 10 events that season, ending the series 25th in points. He joined the IRL in 1996, with a 28th place point finish. Through 1996, Zampedri had participated in two Indy "500" races - earning a career-best 4th place in 1996 and an 11th place finish in 1995.
