Luyendyk has been a regular in the Indy "500" since 1985, when he was named Rookie of the Year. He has posted three podium finishes at the prestigious event. In 1990, he captured his first championship victory-earning a record $1,090,940. In 1991, he won the fight for third at the 450 mile mark, holding the position to the finish line. In 1993, he almost added another trophy to his collection. He chased Fittipaldi to the finish line, trailing the leader by 2.862 seconds.
Luyendyk made his debut in the PPG Cup in 1994, at Elkhart Lake, finishing eighth. The next year, he ran a full schedule, earning the series Rookie of the Year award. Except for a few seasons, he ran a full schedule in the series every year before he split off to join the IRL in 1996. Consistently towards the front of the pack, he finished the series five times in the top-10 point standings and three times in the top-20 point standings. In his third IRL race at Phoenix in 1996, he captured his second Indy Car victory. He also won the pole at Las Vegas.
Luyendyk was born September 21, 1953, in Rosmalen, Holland. Prior to Indy Car racing, he competed heavily in Super Vee Series across Europe and the United States. In 1997, he won the European Super Vee and European Western Zone titles. He flexed his muscles on American tracks as well. He picked up three third place ribbons competing in the Bosch Super Vee Series, finishing fourth in points. Luyendyk has also driven Formula Ford cars, winning the title at the European Championship at Zandvoort in 1975.
