PICKERINGTON, Ohio -- The first meeting of a new American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) Speedway Advisory Committee was held recently in Sacramento, Calif., to assist with planning for the 2000 and 2001 racing seasons.

"We were very pleased with the tone of our first meeting," Amick said. "We covered a lot of ground, and it came as no surprise that the committee members and guests in attendance shared an abiding love of one of our sport's most venerable disciplines."

The committee was created to advise AMA Sports on establishment of rules governing the tradition rich sport of American speedway, which has produced five world champions over the years. The committee will meet three times in 2000, and twice annually thereafter. Reports on its activities will be delivered each year to AMA Congress and the AMA Board of Trustees.

Members of the AMA Speedway Advisory Committee for 2000 include promoters Jason Bonsignore and Dave Joiner; rider representative Bart Bast; AMA Congress members Jim Hutzler and Buck Murphy; team owner representative Ed Rose; Junior Speedway representative Duane Yarrow; referee John Grant; Harald Zechner of Raz Video Productions; AMA Speedway consultant George Rich; AMA Vice President Bill Amick and AMA Sports Director Hugh Fleming.

No major rule changes have been made for the 2000 season, but members of the speedway committee were asked to thoroughly examine current rules in preparation for 2001 revisions.

The deadline for proposing 2001 rule changes is July 1, 2000. The next meeting of the AMA Speedway Advisory Committee has tentatively been set for Sunday, July 23, in Sacramento, Calif.
