IRL: Pep Boys Indy Racing League will not race in Cleveland in 2000

4 September 1999

INDIANAPOLIS - City of Cleveland Mayor Michael White announced today that he is withholding his support of a Pep Boys Indy Racing League-sanctioned oval-track race at the Burke Lakefront Airport in the year 2000.

League officials were approached earlier this year to sanction an oval-track event at the airport site in 2000.

The proposed oval-track layout would have required construction efforts that would need FAA approval. The FAA and Mayor White indicated their hesitancy to undergo construction projects that do not enhance airport operations at Burke Lakefront Airport.

"It is unfortunate that logistical concerns due to construction at Burke Lakefront Airport will keep a Pep Boys Indy Racing League event from occurring there in 2000," said Leo Mehl, executive director of the Pep Boys Indy Racing League. "We were extremely excited when Cleveland racing officials approached the League about sanctioning an oval event at Burke Lakefront next year. The Cleveland area has great race fans, and we looked forward to racing there."
