IHRA: Scott Weney Proves Himself To Be Versatile Driver

23 December 1998

SPRING CITY, PA.-- Many know Scott Weney as a front-runner on the IHRA Snap-On Tools Championship Drag Racing Series sponsored, Alcohol Funny Car points battle. Many would be surprised to know one of drag racings most flexible drivers lurks beneath the thick driving suit. He admittedly just loves drag racing and cant get enough.

The 38-year old chassis builder from Spring City, Pa., not only pilots the 5.8-second Pontiac of car-owner Ken Sheetz in IHRA nationals, but he also proves himself to be a formidable competitor when behind the wheel of his own 4-link equipped, dragster. Weney most recently proved his worth by outlasting 387 entries, and subsequently winning nine rounds to claim the opening event of the Moroso Five Day Bracket Championship. His tireless efforts afforded him a second place points finish in the final event tally of the prestigious bracket race.

While some might consider this to be a pretty steep mountain to climb, to this second-generation racer, its nothing new.

He explains, "Its not real difficult for me. I have raced in this fashion every year since 1983. I would always run either a fuel or an alcohol funny car in the nationals and match races and then race a bracket car on the off weekends. The two styles of race car are so diametrically opposite that it is impossible to get them confused. Though the cars are different, the approach to racing them remains the same. You always look for the other guy at the finish line."

When the 1999 IHRA/Snap-On tour rolls around, Weney will be behind the wheel of the Sheetz Racing entry for his ninth consecutive season.
