NHRA: Gwynn's Raise Nearly $60,000 for the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis

DAVIE, FL. - Friends and supporters of the Darrell Gwynn Foundation and the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis joined forces this past weekend in fighting the battle against spinal cord injuries.

Beautiful sun-filled skies welcomed over 150-golfers who raised nearly $60,000 while taking to the links at the Grand Palms Golf and Country Club in Pembroke Pines, Fla. for a great day of golf and festivities.

"Every year the tournament continues to get bigger and better," said Darrell Gwynn. "It is because of the support of so many friends and sponsors like Mopar, Mac Tools, Winston, Pro Long and the NHRA that allows us to get one step closer in finding a cure for spinal cord injuries. By supporting this golf tournament, we are helping all those who have a dream of one day walking again."

Gwynn, a former NHRA Top Fuel driver, had his career end on Easter Sunday 1990 during an exhibition run at Santa Pod Raceway in England. While traveling at nearly 250-mph, Gwynn's dragster chassis broke in half and hit the retaining wall, paralyzing Darrell from the chest down and causing his left arm to be amputated at the elbow.

"Words cannot describe how important of a role that The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis has played in my life," added Gwynn. "Through their world-class fertility program, they have allowed my wife Lisa and I to share the miracle birth of our daughter, Katie Brianne, while giving hope to thousands of other spinal cord injured patients. We must continue our fight in finding a cure."
