7th Annual Ice Bowl at Talladega: Results and Report

20 January 1998

Estaboga, AL - The 7th Annual Ice Bowl was held this past weekend at
Talladega Short Track and when the dust settled it was Kenny Merchant
of Rustin, LA who was sitting in Victory Lane. The win was the second
Ice Bowl win in as many years for the Louisiana driver and came just
before the rain began to fall ending the day's racing activities
prematurely.

There were 62 Super late models that took times in qualifying with
James Dean of Chunky, MS setting the fast time. Dean would use his
pole position to grab the early lead, but would suffer from a broken
driveshaft early in the 50 lap event putting Merchant into a lead he
would never relinquish. Finishing second was Randle Chupp of
Knoxville, TN, and taking third was John Jones of Rock Creek,
GA. Paul Tims of Georgetown, TN and Patrick Duggan of Lenoir City, TN
rounded out the top five.

In the IMCA Open Wheel Modified feature event Steve Ward of
Texarkana, TX was the winner as he led Gene Boyter and Jimmy Hiett across
the line. Bryan Nevins of Des Moines, IA won the IMCA Stock Car feature.
The Sportsman and Pony Stock features were cancelled due to rain.
