IRP Cancels Groovy Tuesday Street Legal Drag Program Due to Construction

IRP'S "GROOVY TUESDAY" STREET LEGAL DRAGS CANCELED FOR YEAR DUE TO
HEAVY DRAGSTRIP CONSTRUCTION

Indianapolis Raceway Park officials announced today that all remaining
Groovy Tuesday street legal drag racing events have been canceled for
1997, due to a heavy dragstrip construction schedule.

Major construction projects are underway which must be completed by
the 43rd Annual NHRA U.S. Nationals -- the largest, most prestigious
drag race in the world and IRP's premier event -- which takes place
from Wednesday, August 27 through Monday, September 1.

IRP inaugurated the Tuesday night street legal drags this year to
provide the public with an opportunity to race their cars, trucks and
motorcycles in a safe, secure and friendly environment.

According to NHRA Vice President and IRP General Manager Mike Lewis,
the program has surpassed the expectations of everyone at IRP.
"Everyone at IRP is grateful to Groovy Tuesday event sponsor WNAP
(93.1 FM) and the hundreds of drag racing fans who participated every
week," he said.  "We hope the program will grow in 1998 as well."

Although street legal drag racers will not have the opportunity to
test their machines on the IRP quarter-mile for the rest of August,
street legal drag racing will be included in IRP's three fall Team
Kendall Challenge/Sears Craftsman E.T. Drag Racing Series events.  The
days of those events are all Sundays: September 7 and October 5 and
26.
