Las Vegas Motor Speedway and NASCAR Finally Get Together; Winston Cup Date Set for March, 1998

12 August 1997

Richie Clyne, Las Vegas entrepreneur (Imperial Palace) had to hire the Bahre Brothers of the New HAMPSHIRE Motor Speedway to finally wrap up a deal with NASCAR for a Winston Cup race date in 1998 that will probably fill the 110,000 seat super speedway.

The news came in a joint announcement between Clyne, Bill France of NASCAR, T.Wayne Robinson of Winston, and NASCAR drivers Bill Elliott, Dale Jarrett and Rusty Wallace, plus Richard Petty, who runs a stock car driving school at the $80 million facility.

The race will probably take place March 1 or March 8 and will expand the sedan series schedule to 33 races. That's a grind.

The Las Vegas oval has held an IRL race plus a Craftsman Truck event, but a lot of seats have not been filled. TACH says you might see pari-mutual betting on auto racing for the first time next year.
