Specifications for the 1997 VW Golf GL

01/24/97

A few days ago, I said it was interesting to get out of a $78,000 Porsche 911 Targa and into a $15,000 VW Golf. Both have a steering wheel, motor, seats, and four wheels, but one costs 60 grand more than the other. I guess it all boils down to how you want to arrive, and at what speed.

The VW is a great entry level, basic point A to point B automobile. And it's economical. The only frill on the 5-speed, roll up window four door "just married" transportation car is a rear window wiper with washer. Oh yes, it also has a central locking system.

This little box is a kick to drive, and a slam dunk to park easily. Here's what you get for $15,490 (including $1500 for options and 500 bucks in destination charges--the MSRP is $13,470):

Front drive, 2.0 liter fuel injected engine.
Power steering
Independent front strut suspension
All season radial tires
Dual airbags
Daytime running lights
Rear window defroster
Dual side view mirrors
Am.FM cassette radio
Power remote release trunk
Air conditioning

You may get all the same in the Porsche, but it only has 2 seats.
