01/06/97

Dakar Rally organizers announced the death of French motorcyclist Jean-Pierre Leduc, 45, on Sunday. Leduc, a first-time rally participant, fell from his KTM machine during the second stage of the Dakar-Agades-Dakar Rally, at the 247 km mark of the 505-km race between Toumbacounda and Kayes, in Mali. Leduc was riding alone at the time.

A spokeswoman said, "doctors reached him 20 minutes after the fall but nothing could be done." Leduc was married and had a child. He was the 34th person to die in the rally since it was launched in 1979.
