Mitsubishi to Double Engine Shipments to Chrysler

01/02/97

Comline reports that Mitsubishi Motors says it will double the number of engines it ships to Chrysler, early this year. Chrysler requested the additional engines after recording strong sales of autos with Mitsubishi's gasoline direct injection (GDI) engines. Chrysler wants more of Mitsubishi's 2500-3000 cc 6G engine, which it installs in minivans and passenger vehicles.

In the first five months of 1997, the number of GDI engines Mitsubishi ships to Chrysler will double to a rate of 30,000 units per month. In order to fill Chrysler's order, the Japanese automaker will have to reorganize production at various facilities: the company's Kyoto plant is already busy producing cylinder heads and other primary components for the new GDI engines. Mitsubishi has asked Hyundai to produce these parts on an emergency basis.
