NHTSA Investigation of Anti-Lock Brakes Continue

12/30/96

Reuters reports that NHTSA officials continue to investigate safety issues involving anti-lock brakes in certain General Motors vehicles. NHTSA spokesman Tim Hurd commented on the probe: "it's an important investigation, one of the largest we have, but there's no change in the status."

The statement from the NHTSA came in response to news reports last week that said the brake investigation had become a "top priority." The agency has been investigating problems reported by some drivers of GM S/T Pickups and Suburban sport utility vehicles for the last two years.

Bear Stearns & Co analyst Nick Lobaccero said the probe should not affect GM's sales much, unless it leads to a massive recall. He said, "I don't see this an any sort of problem (for GM) in the short term."
