Honda Accord Claims 4th Consecutive Sales Record

12/24/96

Kyodo reported that Honda said Thursday that the Accord set its fourth consecutive record for selling more cars to individual buyers in the U.S. than any other car. The company says its figures come from R.L. Polk and Co., an independent research firm.

R.L. Polk--which began separating fleet purchases from individual consumer purchases in 1993--says the Honda Accord has led the individual purchase market every year. The Accord counted for 351,332 individual U.S. registrations during the 1996 model year (October 1995 to September 1996). During the same period the Toyota Camry garnered 314,415 new individual U.S. registrations, while the Ford Taurus got 80,423. The Taurus still has the most overall registrations, however, with 368,043. Honda's Accord recorded 366,808 overall registrations.

Polk says it considers fleet purchases to be the purchase of 10 or more vehicles registered to the same address.
