China Makes First Solar Car

12/13/96

Xinhua has reported that China's first solar-powered car passed an appraisal by China's State Science and Technology Commission and Ministry of Internal Trade. The car is called the "China No. 1," was made in China's eastern province of Jiangsu, and is the invention of Yang Tingzhu, a scientist with the Hailiang Solar Energy Institute. Experts involved in the appraisal of the solar car said its successful manufacture indicates a major step forward for automotive research in China.

The car carries solar batteries, is economical, and does not pollute the environment. It can travel 202 kilometres on one charge, at maximum speeds of 80 kph and an average speed of about 60 kph. Experts were cited as saying that solar vehicles could be used as taxis in major cities.
