Coroner Says Unbelted Safety Seat Major Factor in Infant's Air Bag Death

12/03/96

The Associated Press reports that the investigation into the death of Alexandra Greer, who was decapitated when the passenger-side air bag of the Volkswagen Jetta she was in deployed, has revealed that the child safety seat the 1 year-old girl occupied at the time of the accident was not belted to the front seat.

Authorities say that the girl and her car seat were thrown into the deploying airbag when Alexandra's mother rear-ended another car in a mall parking lot. Ada County Coroner Erwin Sonnenberg said the fact that the safety seat was not belted to the car's front passenger seat was a major factor in the girl's death.
