Saturn Announces Initiation of Sales in Japan

Saturn to Sell Cars in Japan Next April. New Retailers Signed. TOKYO, Nov. 20 -- Saturn Corporation announced today it will start selling right-hand drive cars at fourteen outlets in Japan beginning in April 1997. Saturn also said it has signed retailer agreements with three more companies, increasing the total number of Saturn retailers in Japan to nine. The new Saturn retail companies are Shiga Nissan Prince Ltd., Shiga Kotsu Ltd. and Kobe Isuzu Ltd. and are assigned to the Shiga market area, Kyoto market area and Hyogo market areas respectively. Saturn of Japan retail facility construction has started, and plans are to have fourteen retail outlets along the densely-populated Pacific belt (Tokaido) region. The Tokaido region encompasses Tokyo, Nagoya, Kyoto/Osaka and Okayama. Currently, Saturn Japan has nearly one hundred retailer candidates and expects to sign additional agreements later this year, giving Saturn approximately twenty sales outlets by the end of 1997. Saturn Japan ultimately plans to have sixty to seventy retail facilities operating in market areas from Hokkaido to Kyushu. "We have studied the Japanese market carefully and our product was developed to meet the needs of this market," said Donald W. Hudler, President of Saturn Corporation, at a press conference in Tokyo. "We are entering this market with a ten-year business plan and we intend to be a long term competitor in this market," Hudler added. Keith S. Wicks, general Director of Saturn Japan, expressed confidence in Saturn's first Japan retailers. "We are excited to add three more strong companies to our retail team. Saturn has been working together with its retail partners to establish retail and service standards in Japan. We are committed to creating enthusiastic customers by offering a unique buying and ownership experience," Wicks said. This weekend, Saturn Japan will unveil its right-hand drive models at the Osaka Import Automobile show. Throughout 1997, these models will also be shown at other major import auto shows to include Nagoya, Tokyo, Kobe, and Okayama. To increase pre-launch brand awareness, Saturn will begin TV advertising this upcoming January. Saturn will introduce three models into Japan, the SL2 sedan, SW2 wagon, and SC2 coupe. Saturn's manufacturing facility in Spring Hill, Tennessee starts production of these models next month. Exported Saturns will be processed and prepared for delivery to retailers at Press Kogyo Co. Ltd. at their plant in Fujisawa, Kangawa prefecture. Press Kogyo is currently modifying its assembly and inspection facilities to start operations early next year. Also, Saturn has established a training center in Tokyo and will begin training retailer employees in January, 1997. In preparation for its entry into the Japan market, Saturn also announced it has launched an Internet web site and Customer Assistance Center. The web site (http//www.saturnjapan.com) has unique features such as a "virtual factory" where a person can simulate building a Saturn, and a "virtual showroom" that creates a three-dimensional space resembling Saturn's auto show booth. The toll-free Customer Assistance Center will respond to inquiries or requests for Saturn brochures.
