11/21/96
Delphi Automotive to Expand Mexico Technical Center CIUDAD JUAREZ, Chih., Mexico, Nov. 19 -- Delphi Automotive Systems today announced plans to expand its Mexico Technical Center in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico's fourth-largest city. Delphi will invest over U.S.$22.6 million or about N$170 million in the expanded center. The expansion will result in a nearly 450,000 square-foot (40,500 square-meter) facility for engineering, laboratory and prototype development, according to J.T. Battenberg III, president of Delphi Automotive Systems. "We are experiencing increased demand for products and services worldwide," he said. "This expanded facility will allow us to continually improve the design, development and marketing of world-class automotive components and systems. "The existing technical center played a key role in the region's sales growth. Now we are expanding the facility to meet our customers' requirements for regional expertise from each of Delphi's divisions," said Battenberg. "It adds up to a focus on keeping Delphi in its position as the world leader in automotive systems and components." Occupancy of the addition will take place in the fail of 1997. At full employment about 1,900 Delphi engineers, technicians and support staff members will be located at the expanded center. The facility will also provide office space for Electronic Data Systems and GM Worldwide Facilities. Delphi opened its existing 200,000 square-foot (18,000 square-meter) Mexico Technical Center along Avenida Hermanos Escobar in July 1995. "This cooperative effort among Delphi divisions increases our ability to provide complete and well-integrated vehicle systems with reduced lead time," said Battenberg. "Expanding the existing Delphi Mexico Technical Center demonstrates our confidence in the region." Battenberg added that the expanded technical center will support a global customer base as well as Delphi operations in Mexico. "We are proud of the contributions of our employees at our Mexican facilities. Expanding the Mexico Technical Center is a natural step in elevating the technical capability of our Mexican operations." Delphi Automotive Systems, with headquarters in Pontiac, Mich., USA, is the world's largest and most diversified supplier of automotive components and systems.
