DuPont Announces Quality Certification of its Safety Glass Interlayer

11/21/96

DuPont Automotive Safety Glass Interlayer Plants Receive QS-9000

TROY, Mich., Nov. 19 -- DuPont is now the only
manufacturer of polyvinyl butyral (pvb) safety glass interlayer in the
world to receive the U.S. automotive industry's QS-9000 quality
certification. The certification has been awarded for quality
management systems at the DuPont North American production facilities
for Butacite(R) pvb interlayer at Fayetteville, N.C., and Parkersburg,
W. Va.

"QS-9000 certification underscores our commitment to continuous
product quality improvement to meet critical safety, optical and
manufacturing process requirements for automotive safety glass," said
David Mooney, worldwide director for Butacite(R) pvb sheet products in
DuPont Automotive. "It reflects our concerted efforts to train
employees and establish continuous improvement systems for all facets
of our business from manufacturing to customer service, marketing and
sales, worldwide."

QS-9000, a quality systems standard developed by the U.S. automotive
industry, goes beyond the International Standards Organization's
ISO-9000 requirements in the breadth of its requirements and depth to
which it is assessed. QS-9000 requires that manufacturers have
documented quality systems related to specific customer requirements
and that those systems are being implemented, including advance
product quality planning.

In addition, companies must be reviewed periodically by an accredited
third-party registrar. The registrar for DuPont Butacite(R) was
Lloyd's Register Quality Assurance (LRQA), which offers certification
services in more than 32 countries around the world.

DuPont facilities for Butacite(R) safety glass interlayer have earned
the Chrysler Corp. "Gold Pentastar" and Ford Motor Co. "Q1" awards as
well as quality standards certifications of major automotive glass
suppliers. DuPont plants for Butacite(R) in Uentrop, Germany and
Ulsan, Korea are ISO-9000 certified.

DuPont Butacite(R) pvb sheeting has been used for nearly 60 years to
produce laminated safety glass windshields. The film-like sheeting,
laminated between two layers of glass under heat and pressure, helps
windows protect occupants by resisting penetration from road debris
and flying objects as its adhesion properties keep glass fragments in
place. DuPont has recently introduced new grades of Butacite(R) for
laminated side windows, and a three- layer product, called
SentryGlas(R) intrusion resistant composite that is being evaluated by
automakers for side windows to provide added passenger safety and
vehicle security.

With world headquarters in Troy, Mich., DuPont Automotive offers more
than 100 product lines to the global automotive industry, including
fibers, films, finishes, plastics, advanced composites, refrigerants,
specialty chemicals and lubricants. DuPont worldwide automotive sales
were $3.6 billion in 1995.
