AlliedSignal Announces Award for French Turbocharger Developers
11/18/96
AlliedSignal Honors Automotive Team in France for Developing Innovative Turbocharger SOUTHFIELD, Mich., Nov. 14 -- A team of employees from an AlliedSignal Automotive plant in Thaon-les-Vosges, France, has been awarded AlliedSignal's first Premier Achievement Award for innovation, for developing a technologically advanced turbocharger -- the Garrett VNT 15. "What this team did is essentially develop a new type of turbocharger that allows vehicle manufacturers to use smaller engine displacements without sacrificing performance," AlliedSignal Automotive President John Barter said in presenting the award at AlliedSignal's corporate headquarters in Morristown, New Jersey, (U.S.A). "The design and performance characteristics of this product represent the forefront of technology in turbocharging systems." The Premier Achievement Award program was started this year to recognize individuals and teams throughout AlliedSignal for accomplishments in pursuit of the company's seven values -- Customer Satisfaction, Innovation, Integrity of Action, People Excellence, Performance, Speed for Competitive Advantage, and Teamwork. It is the highest award the corporation bestows any of its 77,000 employees worldwide. The Thaon-les-Vosges team was one of two award winners from AlliedSignal Automotive who were honored by Barter and AlliedSignal Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Larry Bossidy. Shirley Smith, a production employee at AlliedSignal Automotive's filter manufacturing plant in Stratford, Ontario, Canada, received the Integrity of Action award for encouraging contributions from other employees and inspiring them by example. The other five winners were from AlliedSignal's Aerospace and Engineered Materials units and its corporate offices. The Garrett VNT 15 turbocharger enables smaller engines -- which consume less fuel and produce fewer emissions -- to perform like larger ones, and to burn cleaner by facilitating a more optimal air-fuel mixture. It helps vehicles develop power over a wider span of engine and vehicle speeds, enabling the driver to get the vehicle moving and pick up speed in slow traffic and up hills, with fewer shifts of gears. Today, Thaon-les-Vosges is producing about 600 of the new turbochargers each day for Volkswagen. Next year, 1,000 VNTs will be produced daily, and many other European customers have expressed interest in the product, Barter said. The French turbo team was honored for its speed as well as its innovative technology. While a product of this caliber typically would take more than two years to engineer and launch, the Thaon-les-Vosges brought the VNT 15 to market within one year, Barter said. "Our Total Quality culture teaches us that when a goal is perceived as a personal challenge by each member of the team, then the group has the potential to become a high-performance work team," observed Pascal Leroux, human resources manager at Thaon-les-Vosges. "This is precisely what happened at Thaon-les-Vosges on the VNT 15." Members of the award-winning Thaon-les-Vosges VNT 15 team are Martin Verschoor, Eric Dechanet, Philippe Arnold, Alain Gerard, Jean-Luc Richard, Brigitte Andre, Pascal Simon, Alain Moreau, Regis Roussel and Francis Janin. In winning the Premier Achievement Award for integrity of action, Smith was cited for her professionalism and commitment as leader of the Stratford plant's employee advisory committee, which meets weekly to continuously improve management/employee relations. Smith is a 16-year Stratford employee.
