Detroit Diesel Announces Environmental Certifications for Natural Gas Engine

11/08/96

Detroit Diesel Receives EPA and CARB Certification for Series 30G Natural Gas
Engine

DETROIT, Nov. 6 -- Detroit Diesel Corporation
announced it has received emission certification for its Series 30G
natural gas engine from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
(EPA) and the California Air Resources Board (CARB).

Both the EPA and CARB stated that the Series 30G engine family is the
first to be certified to the EPA's low emission vehicle (LEV)
standards and in California to the optional low emissions Oxides of
Nitrogen (Nox) standards. The Series 30G engine is ideal for a variety
of applications, such as pickup and delivery vehicles, school buses,
commuter buses, refuse packers, street sweepers, airport shuttles, and
airport ground support vehicles.

Federally, the EPA has a Clean Fuel Fleet Vehicle program effective
with the 1998 model year. The program applies to vehicles under 26,000
pounds gross vehicle weight which operate in certain fleets in U.S.
identified nonattainment areas. Beginning in 1998, the program
requires fleets, with ten or more vehicles, operating in ozone or
carbon monoxide nonattainment areas with populations greater than
250,000, to purchase 50% of their less than 26,000 pound vehicles with
engines meeting the program standards.

The Detroit Diesel Series 30G natural gas engine qualifies under the
Federal Clean Fuel Fleet Vehicle program and a fleet will obtain
emission credits for purchasing a vehicle with a Series 30G engine
before the 1998 implementation date.

California has a similar program. An emission credit standard can be
selected for an engine as long as the emissions are below a specified
ceiling. In 1997, the ceiling for truck engines is 3.5 g/hp-hr. Based
on the low emission certification level of the Detroit Diesel Series
30G engine, a credit standard of 3.0 g/hp-hr was established. The
credits belong to the purchaser of the vehicle with the
credit-generating engine. The credits are eligible to be sold to
stationary sources in air quality districts which have developed
programs to meet their air quality goals.
