Chevrolet Analysts Find Model Year Records Chevy Truck Lineup Posts Best Model Year in History Model Year Records Set by Lumina, Blazer, Tahoe & Suburban WARREN, Mich., Oct. 25 -- Chevrolet analysts, with the daunting task of analyzing sales data from General Motors largest division, have found several records for the 1996 model year. As previously announced, Chevrolet had its best model year sales in at last 20 years. Combined Chevrolet car and truck sales for the period were 2,605,239. Passenger car sales for the '96 model year were 1,119,425 units; truck sales were 1,485,814. Analysts have also found that the Chevy truck lineup posted its best model year in Chevrolet's 85-year history. Chevrolet also set model year sales records in the industry's largest car market segment -- midsize cars -- and in the red-hot sport utility vehicle market: * Lumina, with 246,820 sales, up 10 percent from the previous 1993 model year record of 225,025. * Blazer, posting 236,261 units, up 2 percent from the past best model year in 1995 with 231,965 vehicles sold. * Tahoe, with 120,848 sales, up 41 percent from the previous 1978 model year record of 85,880. * Suburban, achieving 87,770 units, up 1 percent from the past best model year in 1994 with 86,972 vehicles sold. Chevrolet has also made significant gains in registrations. Final model year registrations lag sales reports by several weeks, however, the most recent registrations (retail and fleet, calendar year through August 1996) show Chevrolet's significant leadership in several important and critical market segments: * Small Coupe Segment -- Chevrolet's Cavalier is #1 with 116,696 registrations. The stylish compact that was all-new in 1995 has proven very popular with young people and first-time buyers. * High Sport Segment -- Corvette is the best in the U.S. with 15,276 units, despite the fact that Chevrolet will introduce an all-new Corvette during 1997. * Full-size 4-door Sport Utility Segment -- Chevrolet dominates the segment with the top two entrants: Tahoe is tops with 73,107 units, followed closely by the Chevy Suburban with 67,280 registrations. Tahoe and Suburban continue to dominate the segment despite recent competitive introductions.
