EU Allows More Japanese Auto Imports

10/25/96

Comline has reported that the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) has agreed with the European Union's decision to adjust the limits it sets on Japanese auto exports to the fifteen member countries of the EU. The new limits allow an additional 13,000 cars into the market this year, bringing the total to 1,079,000.

The new limits are based on forecasts of total European demand for automobiles which have also been revised, rising 256,000 to a new total of 13,545,000. The last forecasts and limits were set in March. Five of the EU countries set sales limits on autos by country of origin: the UK now allows 180,000 Japanese cars (up 1800), France allows 99,700 (up 3,900), Italy's allows 65,500 (down 200). Spain and Portugal did not revise the limits they set in March.
