GM Announces Lay Offs in Response to CAW Strike--as of 10/15/96

General Motors Update on Operations Affected by the Work Stoppage by the Canadian Auto Workers [EDITOR'S NOTE: Reuters reports that GM issued revised totals for the number of employees it had laid off as of Tuesday (10/15/96) afternoon. The revision lowers the total fromm 10,297, as reported in this press release to 10,187. The difference derives from the total number of Delphi division lay offs, which should read 5,936, instead of the 6,046 cited in this release] WARREN, Mich., Oct. 15 -- As of 11 a.m. EDT Tuesday, October 15, 1996, there have been 10,297 GM North American employees affected by the work stoppage in Canada. We will not speculate on when or which additional facilities could be affected by the work stoppage. Updates on GM facilities affected will be available at 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. each day. Our next update will be at 4 p.m. Tuesday, October 15, 1996. Delphi Automotive Systems will be issuing a separate report listing individual Delphi facilities that have been affected. Delphi employee totals are included in GM's daily totals. Updates are available on GM's media internet site.
