Toyota, Daihatsu, Hino Recall 397,000 Vehicles for Defective Brakes

09/12/96

The Associated Press has reported that Japan's transport ministry announced on Tuesday that Toyota Motor Corporation, Daihatsu Motor Company, and Hino Motors Limited will recall 397,000 vehicles because of defective brakes.

The cars' problems result from defective vacuum pumps for brake boosters that might cause difficulty in braking. Toyota said the models to be recalled included Land Cruisers, Dynas, Toyoaces and Coasters produced between December 1989 and June 1994.

The ministry said 210,000 of the vehicles had been exported to 178 countries, including 65,000 to Australia, 10,000 to Saudi Arabia and 3,300 to Britain. Toyota said that none of the vehicles with defective brakes were exported to the United States.

Daihatsu will recall 3,192 vehicles, Hino will recall 1,900, and the rest are Toyotas. All of the faulty Daihatsu and Hino vehicles were produced between March 1991 and June 1994.
