Subaru Announces Pricing on 1997 Impreza And SVX Models;
Increase of 2.1 Percent Across All 97 MY Lines

CHERRY HILL, N.J., Aug. 28 -- Subaru of America,
Inc. (SOA) announced today the Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price
(MSRP) on its 1997 Impreza and SVX models. In keeping with the
company's strategic direction, the line-up is exclusively all-wheel
drive.

For 1997, the Impreza line-up receives a new front bumper and grille
that enhances the sporty appearance. Engine performance has been
boosted, too. The 1.8 liter and 2.2 liter boxer engines now generate
115 and 137 horsepower, respectively. The Impreza model line MSRP
begins at $13,795 for the 1.8 liter manual transmission Impreza
Brighton Coupe and goes to $18,795 for the fully loaded Outback Sport
2.2 liter automatic transmission model.

Outback Sport: Outback Sport, the "younger sibling" of the Legacy
Outback, combines the versatility of a mini-sport-utility with the
comfort, safety and convenience of a sport sedan. The Outback Sport
has been redesigned from the 1996 Impreza Outback to include the new
standard hood scoop, raised suspension, larger tires, and new
wheelcovers. All of these features create a more aggressive, rugged
look. The Outback Sport also features a 12V power outlet in the cargo
area, new interior fabric and the addition of three new exterior
colors. The 1997 Outback Sport MSRP is $17,995 for the 2.2 liter
manual transmission model and $18,795 for the 2.2 liter automatic
transmission model.

Impreza Sedan and Sport Wagon: The Impreza Sedan and Sport Wagon
line-up has been simplified for 1997 with the elimination of the LX
trim level. Now available only in the L trim level the Sedan and Sport
Wagon feature air conditioning, 8OW AM/FM stereo cassette with four
speakers, power locks and, new for 1997, power windows all as standard
equipment. The styling of the Sedan and Sport Wagon is enhanced by the
new front bumper and grille and the addition of two exterior colors
and new interior fabric. The Impreza Sedan and Sport Wagon MSRPs are
$15,895 and $16,295 respectively for 2.2 liter manual transmission
models. The 2.2 liter automatic transmission model Impreza Sedan and
Sport Wagon MSRPs are $16,695 and $17,095 respectively.

Impreza Coupe: The 1997 Impreza Coupe is targeted to those who want
safety and sportiness in a coupe. The LX trim level has been
deleted. However, the line-up has been enhanced by the addition of a
Brighton Coupe with a 2.2 liter engine and automatic transmission. The
Brighton and L coupes feature the redesigned front bumper and grille,
two new exterior colors and new interior fabric. Power windows have
been added as standard equipment to the L coupe. The MSRP for the
Impreza Coupe Brighton model is $13,795 for the 1.8 liter manual
transmission and $14,795 for the 2.2 liter automatic transmission
model. The 2.2 liter L trim level Impreza Coupe MSRP is $15,895 for
the manual transmission model and $16,695 for the automatic
transmission model.

On an overall sales weighted average, the Impreza line is increasing
$358 or 2.1 percent for the 1997 model year.

SVX: The 1997 Subaru SVX model line-up remains unchanged. The unique
styling of the Subaru SVX is freshened by the new front
grille. Available in L and LSi automatic transmission models the MSRP
is $30,625 and $36,245 respectively.

On an overall sales weighted average, the Subaru SVX line is
increasing $747 or 2.1 percent.

Delivery and destination charges remain at $495 for all vehicles.

Pricing for the 1997 Legacy and Outback models was released in
June. The Outback line, reported independently, had a $357 or 1.6
percent increase due to new equipment. The Legacy sedan and wagons
were reported with a $551 or 2.7 percent increase. Combined, the total
Legacy line increased $442 or 2.1 percent on an overall sales weighted
average.

With today's announcement for the 1997 Impreza and SVX, all 1997 model
year Subaru lines have an overall sales weighted average price
increase of 2.1 percent.
