Mercedes-Benz India Has No Plans to Phase Out Models

08/29/96

Reuters reported that Mercedes-Benz India Ltd (MBIL) has denied newspaper reports that it plans to phase out the models it has been marketing in India.

"The joint venture launched E220 (petrol) and E250D (diesel) highly successful models of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class range in India and these models will continue," a company statement said.

"While MBIL, like all other automobile companies, continues to review its model policy, there is no plan to phase out these tried and proven models in the immediate future," it said.

MBIL also said Daimler-Benz AG did not plan to raise its 51 percent stake in the firm. Tata Engineering and Locomotive Company owns the remaining 49 percent of the company. MBIL sold over 1,500 cars after commercial sale began in January 1996, it said.
