Honda Will Assemble Electric Car in Japan

08/23/96

Nikkei English News reported that Honda Motor Company will start turning out electric cars, the Honda EV, at its Tochigi Prefecture plant in Japan starting at the beginning of next year. Honda's Tochigi plant was designed for low-volume specialty-vehicle production and currently produces about 1,000 NSX sports cars a year. The plant has the capacity to make 6,000 vehicles annually.

Honda will start leasing the electric cars in the U.S. in spring 1997. The car maker plans to ship about 100 of the cars a year. The Honda EV can cover 210Km on a single charge and has a top speed of more than 130kph.
