Mazda Rotary Future Looks Glum

07/31/96

As reported here a few weeks ago, the giant Japanese car maker will not manufacture the Mazda RX-7 rotary powered sportster in 1997. However, rotary enthusiasts were optimistic about the future of the high performance power plant. When Mazda presented the RX-01 sports car at the Tokyo Auto Show, the sleek rotary powered car had 2+2 seating and a 200 HP mill mounted behind the rear wheels. Mazda's new boss, Ford executive, Henry Wallace said, however, that this was just an exercise and that it may not be practical to bring to market. He added they are conducting research on a smaller Mazda rotary that could see the light of day ere long.
