Kia Recalls 1996 Sportage EX Sport Utility Vehicle

07/15/96

Kia announced a voluntary recall of its 1996 Sportage EX sport-utility vehicles in order to replace the accelerator pedal assembly. The company has determined that 693 of the Sportage models made between March 21 and July 4 have defective accelerator pedal assemblies that can stick, causing the throttle to remain open. The situation could result in loss of control and accidents.

Kia has not received any accident reports that link the problem to either crashes or injuries. Kia is contacting owners by phone and by mail to ask them to have the assemblies replaced. The company will pay for the procedure.
