GM Allocates $10 million to Promote Proper Use of Child Seats

06/17/96

In a novel move, General Motors will make its dealerships the focus of a $10 million effort to promote the proper use of Child safety seats. A panel assembled by the Department of Transportation in 1995 estimated that safety seats are often improperly installed and used only about 50% of the time. GM's 8500 dealers will give out pamphlets and demonstrations on the correct use of safety seats and the Corporation will train dealer personnel in this area of safety. The NHTSA estimates that about 3% of the 70,000 children injured in car accidents...ages 1 to 4 were a result of improperly installed safety seats.
