Chrysler Agrees to Restrict Detroit Newspaper Access to UAW Negotiations

06/13/96

Chrysler Corporation has responded positively to the UAW's request that two Detroit Area Newspapers which have refused to negotiate with striking employees be barred from covering negotiations between UAW and the carmaker.

The carmaker released a statement that made the following assertions: "Although Chrysler does not take a position on the Detroit Newspaper Agency's dispute, our priority is to conduct successful talks with the UAW in the most positive atmosphere possible. If excluding reporters from the two striking newspapers in joint situations is necessary to create that atmosphere, we believe it's appropriate. Successful resolution of these contract talks, covering 66,126 employees, takes precedence over other considerations."

Chrysler reserved the right to "continue to provide news and background information to its employees and all news media as it relates to the company's position during bargaining.
