The Fed Sues Chrysler Forcing Recall for Seat Belt Anchors

06/07/96

As reported here May 14th the NHTSA warned Chrysler that Chrysler and Dodges had weak rear seat belt anchors and that the number three automaker should initiate a recall of all of their 1996 models. Chrysler has refused, so the Justice Department has filed a federal lawsuit to force the company to notify owners of Chrysler Cirrus and Dodge Stratus models that their seat belts need fixing. Chrysler says their tests of the rear belt anchors shows the anchors are not faulty and that they do not intend to recall any cars. At issue between MOPAR and Uncle is the type of testing equipment each is using. Chrysler could face a fine of $800,000 if convicted.
