Honda's Earnings Up

05/22/96

Honda Motor Company Ltd reported that their net profits rose to $661 million during the last business year (ended March 31, 1996), up from $575 million in the preceding year. The carmaker attributes the 15 percent rise largely to strong sales of its inexpensive sport-utility vehicles.

Honda expects their good fortune to get better: the Japanese carmaker predicts that aggressive marketing and cost cutting will boost current year net profits to $1.12 billion. Honda cut costs by $411 million last year and plans another $200 million for 1996/97
