GM Raises Questions about Buick City's Future: Body Shop Project Dropped

05/21/96

GM confirmed that it has dropped its plans to build a flexible body shop at the Buick City assembly plant in Flint, Michigan. The decision raises questions about the long-term future of the plant.

The flexible body shop would have allowed Buick City to quickly shift its production among a series of different models. The automaker was expected to invest $250 million into building the facility, but instead they told the United Auto Workers that the project was dead in the water and that it has not identified a future product for the Buick City plant.
