Carey Limousine Company Sued for Overcharging the Affluent

05/21/96

The "world's leading limousine company," chauffeur to the upper crust in 420 cities across the globe, has been named in a class action lawsuit that claims the company overcharged its customers.

The suit claims that Carey disguised its fares by adding a surface transportation charge (STC) to stated hourly rates and other charges. Richard Meltzer, attorney for the plaintiffs, characterized the charge as misleading, saying that it creates the impression that it is an official fee.

The suit was filed on behalf of all former and current customers who paid the charge. It seeks more than a million dollars in damages. Carey Limousine Company made no comment on the suit.
