F1: Monaco Grand Prix Results
05/20/96
The Monaco Grand Prix ran on Sunday under a grey cloud and in partial rain. Olivier Panis (Ligier) won, David Coulthard (McLaren) and Herbert (Sauber) joined him on the Podium.
Five cars were out of the race before the first lap was over, including pole winner Michael Schumacher (Ferrari), Pedro Lamy and G. Fisichella (Minardi), Rubens Barrichello (Jordan), and Jos Verstappen (Footwork). The remaining cars did not finish the full 78 laps of the race because of the two hour time limit, although the winner Olivier Panis (Ligier) completed 75 laps.
Jean Alesi (Benetton) clocked the fastest lap time at 1 minute and 25.205 seconds (lap 58), but was forced to withdraw with mechanical problems on lap 61. With 8 laps left there were only 8 cars left on the field, and four of those had withdrawn by lap 70, when Irvine (Ferrari) spun out just before the tunnel and Salo (Tyrrell) and Hakkinen (McLaren) crashed into him.
Here are the results from the race:
