CART/IndyCar Will Revive Historic Vanderbilt Cup
05/14/96
The oldest trophy/award in American auto racing is the Vanderbilt cup which dates back to 1904 when it was awarded to road racers for five years then revived in 1936 for the New York Cup races that saw the likes of Tazio Nuvalari on American soil. Originally conceived by William Kissan Vanderbilt, grandson of New York Central railroad founder,Commodore Cornellius Vanderbilt the cup was the most prestigious in American motorsports. Now CART has revived the cup and had Tiffanys of New York reproduce a copy of the five foot sterling silver trophy which will hold 30 bottles of champagne. The Vanderbilt cup will be awarded to the winner of the inaugural U.S. 500 at Michigan International Speedway Memorial day and will become...like the Borg Warner trophy at the Indy 500, an annual event at CARTs BIG race.
