GM Recalls 44,000 Sedans Voluntarily

05/09/96

GM announced today that it would conduct a voluntary recall of 44,000 1996 Buick Regal and Chevrolet Lumina sedans. The company will inspect the recalled cars for left front brake pipe clearance. Insufficient clearance could result in front brake pipe rub-through, a loss of brake pipe fluid, and eventual loss of one-half of the car's braking power.

GM will send a letter to customers with potentially affected cars. The letter directs customers to take their cars to dealers, who will inspect the vehicle and either adjust the clearance between the left front brake pipe and the transmission mount bracket or replace the brake pipe. The company will not charge customers for any of this maintenance or repair.

General Motors has received five field reports of worn out brake lines; they are investigating one accident that may be related to this condition. No injuries have been reported.
