Indianapolis Motor Speedway Releases Open Letter to the Indianapolis Community
05/08/96
OPEN LETTER TO THE INDIANAPOLIS COMMUNITY There has been much speculation about how changes to the Indianapolis 500 will affect auto racing and the Indianapolis community. Although we in the business community are not qualified to address all of the intricate issues that have prompted the development of a new racing league - rules alterations, engine and chassis adjustments and the like - we do wish to unequivocally voice our support of a civic partner since 1911 the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Ever since the tradition began, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway has been a strong economic contributor to Indianapolis. Each year, hundreds of thousands of racing fans travel here and spend tens of millions of dollars. Around the world, Indianapolis is known as the racing capital, providing us a positive image and the opportunity to promote our many other achievements. We believe the Hulman-George family is motivated by true sportsmanship and the desire to improve auto racing. We also recognize that change involves risk and that some businesses have been affected. Yet, we stand firmly behind the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and its efforts to produce a plan for the future that secures the 500's rich heritage. Therefore, we collectively pledge our support of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in its initiative to strengthen and perpetuate the Indianapolis 500 as the premier racing event in the world.
