Federal Safety Agency Announces Recall of 22,423 Child Safety Seats

05/08/96

Reuters reported that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced the recall of 21,000 child safety seats made by Century Products Co. and Evenflo Co.

Century Products will recall 11,000 SmartMove Model 4750 convertible seats produced between November 27, 1995 and February 13, 1996. A mismatch of latching components could cause a buckle to release during a crash. Century Products will provide a free retrofit kit for the seats to owners who call the company at 800-583-4093 (toll free) or write the company at 9600 Valley View Road, Macedonia, Ohio, 44056.

Evenflo will recall 11,423 Trooper Adjustable Shield seats, models 219140, 219164, 219180, 219186, and 219188, produced between November 27, 1995 and January 22, 1996. Evenflo will replace the instruction pamphlets for the seats because it switched the instructions for toddler and infant use. NHTSA said the error may lead some parents to think that infants smaller than 20 pounds can ride facing forward. Evenflo will provide a corrected instruction pamphlet to owners who call 800-837-4002 or write the company at 1801 Commerce Drive, Piqua, Ohio, 45356.
