NASCAR: Rusty Wallace Wins Save Mart 300 at Sears Point
05/06/96
Rusty Wallace won Sunday's Winston Cup event at Sears Point Raceway in Sonoma, California. It was his first win on a road course since he won at Sears Point in 1990. It might have been six years since Wallace won on a road course, but the victory made him NASCAR's most successful road-course driver, with six road course victories to his name. Ricky Rudd, Darrell Waltrip, Bobby Allison and Tim Richmond are all tied with five road-course victories apiece.
During 2 restarts in the last 10 laps of the race, Wallace was able to take the lead from Jeff Gordon and hold off a charge from Mark Martin. Wallace led 36 of the race's 74 laps, and it was his 43rd career Winston Cup win.
Martin finished second, Wally Dallenbach, Jr. took third, Dale Earnhardt came in fourth, Terry Labonte placed fifth, and Jeff Gordon finished sixth.
