F1 Fans Hope for Strong Showing from Schumacher

05/03/96

Reuters reported that Michael Schumacher's fans are hoping for a strong showing from the German driver and his Ferrari team at next weekend's San Marino Grand Prix. Schumacher, the defending FIA World Champion, has repeatedly said that he thinks Damon Hill will win this year's World Championship, and, up until last week, Schumacher hadn't made an impressive showing at any of this season's World Cup races.

The San Marino Grand Prix is held in Imola, Italy, however, which is Ferrari's home territory. The Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari is expected to house a capacity crowd for the race, and most of them will be wearing red, Schumacher's Team colors.

Last weekend, at the European Grand Prix in Nurburgring, Germany, Schumacher finished second behind Canadian driver Jacques Villeneuve (Williams-Renault). Nonetheless, he plays down the possibility of winning in Italy. After last week's strong finish he said, in typical Schumacher style, "we are improving, but only by a step at a time and we really have some way to go."
