U.S. Drivers a Surprising Second in Camel World Challenge

04/30/96

Greece won and the U.S. was a surprising second in the toughest Land Rover sponsored CAMEL TROPHY 1000 mile cross country grind in Indonesia. Ken Cameron, Eagle ,Colo., and Fred Hess, tanhope ,N.J. came from 18 places down in the first leg to finish second out of twenty teams from around the world. The grind took three weeks, followed sections of the Trans Borneo Highway and traversed knee deep mud , innumerable rivers, washed out brifges and torrential rains that tested the mettel not only of the contestants but the Land Rover Tdis they were driving. In some cases the Land Rovers used air intake snorkles to cross rivers. The French team came home third and Russia fourth in the event dubbed the Olympics of four-wheel drive.
