F1: Villeneuve Wins European Grand Prix
04/29/96
Jacques Villeneuve won his first Formula One title just four races into his first F1 season. Villeneuve drove his Williams-Renault to victory in the FIA's European Grand Prix World Championship race at Nurburguring, Germany over the weekend. Villeneuve led from the start to finish the race in 1:33.26.473, with an average speed of 121.72 mph. He's the first Canadian to win a Grand Prix since his dad, Gilles, won in 1981.
German driver Michael Schumacher came in second in his Ferrari, 0.762 seconds behind Villeneuve. Third position on the podium was saved for Brit driver David Coulthard who finished 32.834 seconds down in his McLaren-Mercedes.
This season's unstoppable driver Damon Hill has been stopped. A bad start, a bad pit stop and a collision with Pedro Diniz put him in fourth place as a finisher, 33.511 seconds behind his teammate, Villeneuve.
