New Race Track at Pikes Peak

04/26/96

Work is starting on the new one mile D-oval Pikes Peak International Raceway located just outside of Colorado Springs, Colo. There will be a 1.4 mile road course snaking through the infield and seating for 40,000 fans. Slated to open in early 1997, the facility is conducting shmooze sessions with major sanctioning bodies and will probably kick off with a outhwest Tour Winston Cup NASCAR race and as the SCCA national headquarters are a skip-and-jump down the road there will no doubt be sports car races and maybe a Trans Am down the line. Because of its location the track may be used for high altitude EPA testing.
