What New Car Buyers are Watching on TV

04/23/96

The United Press International reported that the 1996 J.D. Power and Associates Car Media Report surveyed 30,507 new car buyers to find out what they were watching on the television.

Not surprisingly, sports topped the list; football was the most popular of all sports watched. Between 52 and 60 percent of all new car buyers turn on the tube to watch playoff and regular season football games, while 67.3 percent of them watch the super bowl.

Baseball and college basketball got the next highest ratings from car buyers: 49.1% of them professed tuning in the world series and NCAA Basketball's final four. The NBA championship drew 48.1% of those surveyed, NBA playoffs drew 47%, and ice hockey drew 35%.

New car buyers also liked comedy shows (37%) and the news (14%). As far as individual shows go, "ER" is the most popular (18%), "Seinfeld" came in second (17.7%), "Friends" scored third (14.7%), "Home Improvement" came in fourth (12.6%), and "Fraser" scored fifth (8.7%).
