IRL Releases Entries for 80th Indy 500

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the Indy Racing League have announced the list of entries for the 80th running of the Indy 500, which will take place in Indianapolis on May 26th this year. 77 cars filed entries by the April 5th deadline. Race fans will have to wait to see how the field ultimately shapes up, though, as not all those cars have drivers yet. Indy rules allow drivers to be added later.

Arie Luyendyk and Roberto Guerrero--both brickyard record holders--head the list of the 35 drivers that have been named to date. The Indy race cars, the tires on them and the brickyard's newly repaved racing surface could be factors that add up to the fastest Indy field in the race's history. Already four drivers have clocked unofficial practice laps of over 235 mph at the track.
