CART Puts Andretti on Probation, Fines Others
04/18/96
CART doesn't like the monkey business it has seen on the PPG IndyCar circuit this season. CART's chief steward Wally Dallenbach put Michael Andretti on probation and levied $5,000 fines against driver Christian Fittipaldi and the teams of Andretti and Mauricio Gugelmin.
Andretti has been criticized by other drivers this season, and earned probation for rough driving in three out of this season's four IndyCar races. He was cited for knocking into PacWest Racing drivers on three occasions and a Penske driver on another.
During last Sunday's Long Beach Grand Prix Andretti (who drives for Newman-Haas) and Mauricio Gugelmin (PacWest Racing) tangled after the race in the pit lane area. The confrontation earned both their teams $5,000 fines.
Christian Fittipaldi earned his $5,000 fine for an on track altercation with Canadian rookie Greg Moore. After the two drivers collided, Fittipaldi ran over to Moore, flipped up Moore's visor and stuck his finger in Moore's face. When Fittipaldi pushed Moore, emergency workers separated the two drivers.
