U.S. Auto Exports to Japan Up

04/15/96

The White House announced that exports of U.S. made cars and car parts to Japan are up more than 35% since the U.S. and Japan reached an agreement about opening up Japanese auto markets last summer. U.S. Trade Rep Mickey Kantor said that auto exports to Japan now totaled $3.8 billion, surpassing exports to the European Union. The number of cars exported to Japan now exceeds 140,000.

Despite progress in exports of autos to Japan, Detroit-based auto makers are still having problems opening dealerships there. Only 30 U.S. car dealerships have opened in Japan since the trade agreement was signed. The Big Three wanted 200 retail operations in the country by the end of 1996.
